That difference matters: Meridian does not sell machinery. We coordinate the entire chain from the moment the unit is in the seller's hands in the USA until it arrives sealed, documented, and cleared at your destination in Latin America.

The Import Process, Step by Step
Importing farm machinery from the USA has five stages. Each stage has a clear responsible party.
1. Send the unit details before you buy
Before transferring funds, share the listing link or auction page, make, model, year, serial number, hours, photos, and the pickup ZIP code. Meridian reviews the export-side data: weight, dimensions, whether the unit fits a container or needs a flat rack, and whether the seller's documentation is in order. This is the right time to contact us — not after payment.
2. Pickup and inland transport in the USA
Once the deal is confirmed, we coordinate pickup directly from the farm, auction, or dealership. Inland transport in the USA is priced by distance: a tractor in Iowa costs differently than one in North Dakota or Texas. For oversized equipment — combines, large self-propelled sprayers — we arrange specialized transport with the required route permits.
3. Preparation, packing, and loading
Machinery that fits in a container moves through our facility in Albion, Iowa: partial dismantling when needed, phytosanitary cleaning, secure packing, and photo documentation at each step. Equipment traveling on a flat rack is prepared at the export port. Everything is documented with photos before the container is sealed.
4. Export documentation and ocean freight
We prepare all export documents: Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, AES/EEI filing, and phytosanitary certificate when required. We book ocean freight to the agreed port — Buenos Aires, Santos, Paranaguá, Montevideo, Arica, or others depending on the destination. Ocean freight includes cargo insurance.
5. Customs clearance and delivery at destination
When the shipment arrives at the destination port, the import leg is handled by your local customs broker or agent licensed in the destination country. They confirm tariff classification, duties and taxes, local sanitary and phytosanitary inspections, and final delivery to the farm or warehouse. Meridian supports them with complete documentation so clearance has no surprises.

Freight and Transport: Container or Flat Rack
The packing type and ocean route depend on the dimensions and type of machinery.
Standard container (20' or 40'): compact and mid-size tractors, smaller planters, farm implements, spare parts. Advantage: lower ocean freight cost and less exposure during transit. The machinery must be partially dismantled to fit within container internal dimensions.
Flat rack (open platform): combines, large self-propelled sprayers, excavators, loaders, and oversized equipment. The unit is secured to the platform and covered when applicable. Ocean freight cost is higher, but it is the technically correct solution for equipment that does not fit in a container.

Customs clearance at the destination is handled by your local customs broker or agent — the person or firm licensed to operate before the customs authority in your country. Meridian delivers complete export documentation for predictable clearance: Bill of Lading, commercial invoice, packing list, AES/EEI filing, and phytosanitary certificates when applicable. The broker uses that documentation to classify, value, and clear the goods under local regulations.
How long does shipping from the USA to Latin America take?
Total time depends on the pickup location in the USA, the ocean route, and the clearance process at destination. The preparation and loading phase in the USA typically takes two to six weeks depending on equipment type and vessel availability. Ocean transit adds two to six more weeks depending on destination and carrier. Clearance at destination depends on your broker and local regulatory agencies. Is it safe to buy machinery I cannot inspect in person?
Arranging an in-person inspection or hiring an independent inspector before buying is possible and recommended for high-value equipment. Meridian can receive the inspector and coordinate access to the unit. Before any movement, we review the seller's data, the serial number, and title documentation with you to identify obvious red flags.
What Meridian does not do: assess the mechanical condition of the unit or guarantee the equipment's state at the time of purchase. That is confirmed by the independent inspection and the seller's track record.
