Three DMI 730 Deep Rippers - Direct Towing and Container Export

In 2018 Meridian Freight used its own truck to tow three DMI 730 deep rippers, each about 18 ft wide and 6.5 metric tons, several hundred miles to the packing facility. There it disassembled them and marked the components for reassembly. Approximately 19.5 metric tons of equipment then moved by container through Chicago, Long Beach and Busan to Vladivostok.

The shipment

The three machines were purchased from private farmers rather than at auction. Alexey visited the farms, inspected the equipment and negotiated the transactions directly with the sellers. Each DMI 730 was approximately 18 ft wide in both working and road-transport configuration and weighed about 6.5 metric tons. Meridian used its own truck to tow the implements over rural Midwestern roads for several hundred miles to the packing facility, subject to the applicable routing requirements. Moving an implement this wide on a lowboy would first require partial disassembly and specialized loading. That alternative was estimated at approximately $6,000-$7,000 per machine. Direct towing cost about $1,500 per machine, producing estimated gross inland savings of approximately $13,500-$16,500 across all three units. At the facility, Meridian disassembled the rippers and marked related components with orange identification marks for reassembly. The three principal frames were positioned on edge along the container walls. Total equipment weight was approximately 19.5 metric tons. The container moved through Chicago, Long Beach and Busan to Vladivostok, where Meridian's responsibility ended. The customer reassembled and placed the machines in service without reported delay, damage, missing components or route change.
